Build and Market Your Magic With Intention

When was the last time someone asked, “So, what do you do?” Or maybe you’ve had an interviewer say, “Tell me about yourself.”

If you really think about it, we’re always marketing ourselves, both personally and professionally. Yet, few of us have learned to do so with intention or an eye towards accomplishing the goals we have for our lives.

Knowing how to clearly articulate what we do and our value is an essential step in marketing what I call your “magic”, i.e., the combination of your skills, knowledge, experience, presence, and personality. When you market your magic with intention, you stand out and potentially open doors to dream opportunities, both personally and professionally.

Here are 4 tips to get you started:

Uncover Your Signature Strengths

What are you good at? What are you known for? What are you the go-to person for - at work or among friends? What problems are you best at solving? What excites you? What drains you? What do you naturally do without even thinking about it?

Your answers to these questions are essential to helping people understand who you are, what you do and whom you serve.

Communicate Your Magic with Clarity and Confidence

Once you’re clear on your signature strengths, learn to communicate them clearly. That means no more stumbling when someone asks, “so, what do you do?” Boldy tell them what you do while highlighting your magic or impact, instead of your role or title.

Here are some examples:

Role: I'm a program specialist for the federal government.

Magic: I provide states with guidance and support on child support enforcement and collection policy so we can help more children avoid poverty.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Role: I'm an executive coach helping people reach their goals.

Magic: Using my 20 years in leadership roles, I help leaders and professionals be more confident, effective and achieve epic living.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Role: I'm a tax preparer.

Magic: I take the dread out of tax season by managing tax preparation for small businesses so they can focus on running their business.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Role: I’m a recruiter.

Magic: I help hiring managers attract and acquire good talent to fill key positions in the IT industry.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Just stating your role is often vague, boring and a conversation stopper.

But your “magic” piques interest, is a conversation starter, and can help you share more of your story and land a new opportunity.

Your turn:

I _________ (verb) _________ (who) __________ (do what)________ (why).

Note: Always remember the 3Ts for effective communication.

Leverage Your Relationships

Focus on mutually value-added connections over networking for a self-centered outcome. Authentic genuine connections will typically lead to relationships that will inevitably help you reach your goals.

Remember it takes two to make a relationship. Do your part to stay connected. Send a birthday card. Schedule a quarterly lunch meeting. The goal is to stay connected when there’s no need and also keeps you top of mind should opportunities come up.

Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

Think of your personal brand as You, Inc. In order to have a good reputable personal brand and market your magic. You must increase your emotional intelligence (EI). In his book Working with Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman discusses four emotional intelligence skills, group under two main categories: personal competence and social competence. Personal competence includes self awareness and self-management. Social competence includes social awareness and relationship management.

Increasing your emotional intelligence through self-knowledge and self-awareness is key to building your brand with intention and marketing your magic with authenticity. This means having a realistic perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivations, and emotions and managing it in a way that elevates your personal brand versus diminishes it
